Large Scale Painting Commission

Really fun project working with the client's creative team to develop a large painting for their new flagship store in NYC.  This is a good example of a high volume, comprehensive feedback loop between art director and artist.
Picture
I designed this initial mood board based on the brand's aesthetic, the product line being featured for the opening, the architectural drawings of the new space and a combination of the inspirational references the client provided, and my own suggestions.
Picture
First digitally painted tear sheet of many.
Picture
Tear sheet for a development of the second concept that I thought was the strongest of the group. Versions based on art director feedback.
Picture
Ultimately, the first concept was chosen and developed for finish. This sketch was owing a lot to Diebenkorn, Frankenthaler and Rothko.
Picture
The final photoshop sketch before going to real paint. I endeavored to solve as many problems as possible at this stage to avoid having to make any client requested changes at the 11 ft scale on the final.
Picture
The digital file roughly composited into the space it would be hung in.
Picture
Concept for component stretcher bars. The painting was to be executed un-stretched here in Atlanta and then freight shipped to NYC to be mounted and installed.
Picture
15 oz triple primed mural canvas. A scale study painted using premixed, ben moore regal select flat latex hangs at left.
